How do I add pauses?

Controlling the pacing of your narration is essential for creating a natural and engaging listening experience. In Narration Box, you can manually dictate exactly where and how long the AI voice should pause by inserting specific text tags directly into your script.

Supported inline pause tags (and how long they pause)

Use these pause tags inside square brackets:

  • [shorter pause]0.25s

  • [short pause]0.5s

  • [medium pause]1s

  • [long pause]2.5s

  • [longer pause]5s

How to insert a pause (step-by-step)

  1. Open your Audiobook project and go to the chapter you want to edit.

  2. Click inside the text where you want a break in the narration.

  3. Type one of the pause tags, for example:

    • ...and then he stopped. [medium pause] The room went silent.

  4. Generate your audio again to hear the pause applied.

Example (how it looks in your text)

He opened the door slowly. [short pause] Nobody was there. [long pause] Then he heard a whisper behind him.

That’s it. The AI narrator will automatically pause at those exact points while reading.
